Dashboard Rattle
About a week after getting my HHR, a rattle started in the dash. I couldn't find it, but found that if I pressed against the waterfall portion, it would lessen (not completely stopped). I got my partner to drive while I poked and prodded to try and find the cause. No luck. When we got home, I started poking around the panels and found that the fuse panel on the passenger side was not completely snapped into place. I pulled it off and replaced it. Took it out for a drive, and the rattle was gone. It sounded like it was coming from up in the dash, but was down low. You may want to check that panel on yours.
My HHR has had rattles in the headliner, sunroof when propped up, dash (drivers side and center), and door panels. The headliner was fixed by the dealership, but the rest are all still there. On smooth roads, I don't hear any of them, but on rough roads there's plenty of rattling and buzzing. I haven't had good luck getting noises like that fixed on any of the new cars I've had...
The dealer said the same thing to me last week, so I made them take a drive with me still they heard nothing. I asked the guy if he had bad hearing he said yes go figure. I told him I didn't care I wanted it fixed since it is driving me crazy and a new car shouldn't do this. So, they took the headliner down and found the glue had come unstuck...rattling has now stopped (for now).
I was having a hell of a time with what I thought was a dash rattle. Finally figured out that it was a heat shield that was rubbing on the firewall! Got that fixed and blissful silence was restored.
Both my 06 and now my 08 had a squeak/rattle from the plasic housing around the rear wiper switch and cigarette lighter. When I pressed in that area, the noise would stop and as soon as I let go it was back. My 06 was fixed by the dealer with some sort of insulating material, and I hope to have the new dealer do the same with my SS.
Posted this in SS forum. Should work for other squeaks. Best is to get small adhesive backed felt pads from Ace or Walmart, $2-$3 for a bunch of different diameter pieces. Great for eliminating contact sqeaks.
As an FYI, my SS gets a squeaking noise under the dashboard when it gets cold, just to the left of the steering wheel.
Easy to solve tho, 2 screws underneath (point towards the sky) hold the panel in place. Once removed, pull down and back and it will pop the 3-4 fasteners at the top. Use the one sided felt tip pads with adhesive on other side(sold at walmart, ace etc for funiture etc) and put it on the top inside piece. This completely eliminates the loud squeek!

My SS goes in monday for 1 - Headliner velcro letting loose. (stupid)
2 - Sunroof glass rattles. (poss. major issue)
3 - Loud thump from pass side rear. (shock?)
4 - Drivers side pillar rattles. (non issue)
5 - Hatch creeks, even after oiling. (non issue)
It has 15,600 miles
, And those are my only probs. All sound issues.
Considering the way i drive this thing, I'm very satisfied with the SS !!!
