Other than what's in the two kits, is there anything else I will need?
I assume as long as the gaskets aren't damaged, they can be reused.
Thanks again.

You might order a GM crankshaft seal

Yikes! That’s the saggiest timing chain I’ve ever seen. Surely a failed tensioner. Will happily pay shipping so I can dissect it.

I agree. Don’t start it!

My understanding of the chain problem has evolved. I now suspect at the root of most problems is a malfunctioning tensioner, cascading to a thrashing chain, damaging the front guide, accelerating chain wear. Results might be metal shavings from chain contact with front guide bolts and other parts, and chunks of broken chain guide in the oil pan.

If you find a broken front guide, search for the pieces, including removing the oil pan, being sure to check the oil pickup screen.

Many like to change the water pump. I don’t like that because a cheapie water pump is likely to fail before the OE would have. If you replace it, get the best.

My next chain job will be done with:
  • OEM chains
  • OEM tensioner
  • Anyone’s guides, except
  • ZZP front guide
Sprockets need to be assessed for wear. (They don’t usually wear much.) But I would consider new VVT positioners (phasers,) depending on age and prior maintenance. (Given your heavy shavings, I would replace.)

I chose to replace the engine cover gasket, because if it leaks, fixing it is a big pits. I reused the valve cover gaskets because a leak there is easier to address.

My Fel-Pro engine cover gasket came with a CR seal. Both have been criticized here, and that’s defensible. The Fel-Pro needs a little sealant in a couple places or it might weep. The CR (SKF, with “Wave Seal” feature) seals work in such a way that they may weep, at least for a time. This may be misinterpretted as leakage. I won’t use the Fel-Pro seal again, but the CR seal is as good as they get for reliability and life, if you can live with the possible weep.

Good point! I will get the timing cover seal and crankshaft seal. What’s the deal with the upgraded bolt? What’s wrong with the bolt and what’s the upgrade for?

It's where the sealing element meets like a "T", two places, I think, but if you get any other brand you won't have to worry about it.

Once upon a time there was a thread about this, w/ pics.
