Welcome to the site, it could be a combination of bad clock spring and or, loose underhood fuse box halves, if there is a Burnt third brake light bulb the cruise won’t work .

Our friends at Rockauto have the clock spring

And there is a discount code here

Thank you I will have my husband check the fuse box and 3rd brake light. Also I forgot to mention that we did put it on a scanner and got the following 2 codes: P1682 and P0650.

Why are you doubting the diagnosis?

Has anybody been playing with the steering wheel, maybe swinging it as far L&R as it can go, or pulling the airbag off and doing anything under there?

Those codes could be related to a broken/disconnected clockspring. As are the symptoms cited.

P0650 is for the MIL bulb per

https://www.obd-codes.com/p0650

P1682 is in regards to the ignition switch, per

https://www.autocodes.com/p1682_chevrolet.html

Have the ignition switch recall been done?

Sorry was not doubting the diagnosis just wanting to make sure that could be it before I spent the money to buy a clock spring and I had forgot to mention the codes in my first post. And no nobody has been playing with the steering wheel and nobody has ever touched the airbag or inside the steering wheel at all. And now that I know those codes could be related to the clock spring then that is where we will start. Thank you!

From the news article I posted the link to:
March 28, 2014: GM recalls an additional 824,000 vehicles (including all model years of the Chevrolet Cobalt and HHR, the Pontiac G5 and Solstice, and the Saturn Ion and Sky), stating ignition switches could be faulty; the new total number of recalled vehicles in the U.S. is 2,191,146.

Like Oldblue said, get 'er down to your local dealer ASAP. Most likely they will have to set up an appointment, they'll need to order the parts. Mine is an '08 as well; my kid procrastinated on this recall until last year, and had to wait for the parts to arrive. I was furious, this is truly a safety issue.

Until you get it fixed, you should remove all other items from the key ring -leaving just the key and the fob. Read the 2nd paragraph in this link: https://www.safercar.gov/Vehicle-Own...ll-Information
