Electrical - no a/c, no temp reading, but no errors
Electrical - no a/c, no temp reading, but no errors
I have had instances where my 2010 2.4 LT gauge shows no temperature reading. When I turned off the vehicle and turned it back on, the reading was normal. This also applies to the digital temp reading. A warning light never appear about the coolant temp. This has occurred about 5 times.
Today, this occurred and the A/C would not blow cold. Turning the vehicle off and restarting did not fix it
The only other electrical issue is the intermittent air-bag message, which does not seem to be affected by playing with the connector under the seat.
Any suggestions for where to start looking? No a/c in Florida is still a little rough this year... and I commute 7 hours per week.

How old is the thermostat?
Only use an AC Delco 131-158 180 degrees thermostat.
How old is the Dexcool? It has a 5 year lifespan.
have you tried burping the cooling system?

DexCool is 22 months old
The temp of the motor does not seem hot. When it fixes itself from an immediate restart, the temp is right where it normally sits (I think it is 209). So my assumption has been that it was electrical
Burp it? Like squeeze the hoses? Not familiar with that term.
THANKS!!
Probably the temp sensor. The first code does not always trigger a CEL. Check for codes anyway, when the reading is --- and AC won't work. Same code for temp sensor and t-stat. "normal" operating temp is 180F - 195F, you may have other problems. Have you checked the coolant level under the pressure cap? Is the t-stat a ACDelco 131-158?
When I was guessing the temp, I was guessing. Maybe it was 189 and it seems to open at 200.
I believe I replaced the temp sensor at the same time (did timing chains and water pump at that time around Christmas 2016), but I am not certain. IIRC, the hardest part about that is just reaching it. Seems like a reasonable thing to do. Will check the fluids.
Coolant level under the cap looks good. Overflow container looks low. Will add some. Squeezing the hoses does not affect the levels (rises when I squeeze and goes down when I let go).
My OBD2 reader does not work on this car for some reason. I have been relying on lights and I have zero indicators. So, if I am hearing you right, you believe the HHR will disable the A/C when it believes the cooling system is not working right. Is that true.
Thanks for the ideas. I will start with the basics of the cooling system and go grab a sensor this evening.

If the coolant does not warm up fast enough or is too low the AC will not function and the reading will be ---. Usually there will be a P0128 code either current or pending. If the sensor is broken the computer thinks the temp is ---.
The t-stat is supposed to open when the temp rises to 180F and closes when the temp reaches 180F. It's job is to keep the temp above 180F. It is the fans job to cool it, it turns on at 219F and off at 180F.

Oldblue and donbrew: Thanks. I think both of you have posted to each(every one) of my threads.
Replaced the sensor and it read —- when I started it. I thought about letting it warm in the garage and decided to drive. Half a mile up the road, I think it got enough fluid to the sensor and started responding instantly. Went just a couple miles and stopped. It ran at 189.
Will be burping it for awhile. My commute is long and I can check levels after each trip for awhile.
Think this conquered the issue.
Is the thermostat stat the right part number? Not sure. I know that when I punch that part number in for my car, it says it is not the OEM for my 2010 2.4, so probably not that part number. I was thinking it was a 190 and not a 180 and the readings would suggest that is correct. I will pay attention and see what happens.
Thanks again

All HHR’s use that AC Delco 180 degree thermostat, not the cheap professional $15.00 one but the $38.00 131-158
