In the US the kits were ordered by VIN, The keys and cylinder setup same as from the factory. So if the door cylinder is not the one from the factory the key won't work. The installer was supposed to confiscate the old keys, since the keyring hole was part of the recall.

As an bonus you probably have remote start after you get the fob programmed. If no button for it Panic + Lock does the same thing. After RS is activated in the DIC.

 

OP reported that the key now works to unlock the door.

Yes. Same.

In reality, I put the rope through the back door. This is more convenient because it is narrower and has a square window shape.
And the loop on my rope was not self-tightening. Just a loop because I don't know how to make tricky knots.
