It would take some considerable force placed on the manifold to break it, you'd really have to bottom out on something, then you'd have corresponding damage to the downpipe and the exhaust.
Thanks for breaking that down for me, and what you said makes sense.

Do you think me treating my HHR like the General Lee has anything to do with this?

just kidding.

update:

I dropped my HHR off at the dealership (the 1st one that I took it to when this problem started up) this morning. The service rep just called to tell me that they are replacing the catalytic converter. She said that her mechanic feels that it's the cat instead of the manifold.

...whatever works, and if it doesn't work then they can try something else. She said that it should be ready tomorrow. Key word = should

I'll be headed to a rental car place this afternoon so I can get to work or anywhere else that I need to. This time I'll be going for a sport compact, but I for sure won't be asking for something like what I already drive. Last time that didn't work out so well for me.

Some of you may remember this
My rental is a Dodge Caliber

BAM! The tech said it was the cat, but from the looks of it the entire downpipe w/cat was replaced.

My HHR sounds like it should now, and I can even hear the engine purr when I'm laying into the throttle. It's been a while since I've heard that.

My Cobalt SS had an odd rattle whenever I would take off. It was a rattle, sounded like a heat-shield. It was only REALLY noticeable from outside.

Took it in, they replaced the manifold. Still rattled. They replaced the cat, went away. Sounds like yours was similar.

Very similar, except that I could hear this in the cab with the windows up and the radio turned up as well. Having 2 dealerships tell me "that everything sounded like it should" was nerve racking to say the least. I'm very happy that it's fixed.

for free.

Glad you got it sorted...... That downpipe with the flex pipe and cat all in one is a weak point in the system.
