Evap p0442 issue
Greetings fellers. I have a interesting p0442 going on with my 2011 chevy hhr. I replaced the vent solenoid first, didn't work. Replaced the fuel cap, still a no. Tried another that was oem, same thing. Did a smoke down test on the rear, no leaks. Before I start replacing the purge canister and the charcoal canaster, I thought I'd ask you guys.
Here are a couple readouts.
. 020 failed. Rest passed.
Any ideas? We are needing this figured out ASAP die to emissions this month and trip to California.

I would not even think about replacing the canister.
Most times it is the rubber grommet on the vent valve or a rust hole in the EVAP tube in front of the driver rear wheel. Could be something loose or dry rotted on top of the tank.
Any symptoms? Hard to start, hard to fill, smell of gas etc.?
I have never heard of a smoke test finding anything. My opinion is they are useless.
As long as it is the only fault the Federal law allows it to pass inspection.

I'll order a vent valve and go from there. The only issue it has is rough idle. Starts fine. Don't smell gas.
I'm still open to ideas.

Not the valve, the rubber seal the goes on the nipple. It is not always included in the package and usually gets mucked when the valve is replaced.
Rough idle could be either dirty throttle body or leak in the EVAP tube.
If you don't command the purge valve to open the smoke will not flow through the EVAP tube at all, a tiny hole will not be enough unless you put a lot of pressure behind the smoke.

Defective vent or purge valve the vent valve in the back is normally open , the purge valve is under the hood and normally closed. The test is can you blow air through the valve under the hood. If so replace it.
