Excessive Halfshaft Play on 2006

When I jack up the rt frt wheel and rotate it front to back there is excessive play where the half shaft goes into the transmission.

Anyone have the same issue, or suggestions on what to check first?

I split this off from a three year old thread for you, the original thread's OP has been inactive for a couple of years now.

As to the excessive play when rotating the halfshaft, the first thing to determine is if the movement is actually at the spline joint where the halfshaft enters the transmission.

How many miles are currently on your HHR, and is there evidence of fluid leakage at the inner CV/Tripod joint?

Describing the amount of excessive play in "rotational degrees" or in "inches of travel" would also help describe the situation.

Excellent points whopper, glad your coffee kicked in sooner than mine today.

Love my early coffee. :)

BTW - checking the "free rotational distance at the wheel" (patented term btw - LOL) is part of my maintenance routine on the bikes - it pinpointed a worn shaft drive issue I had years ago, and save major headaches on a pending long tour.

Over 100K on it.

At the wheel I would say 2"-3" or so-enough that it's noticeable when you stop and take off. I talked to a mechanic friend that said (w/o inspecting it) it may just be normal wear for a car with that many miles on it. He said it's sorta like the differential for a rear wheel drive car.

All the boots look fine and no evidence of leakage.

The only place there is 'slop' is where the half-shaft enters the x-mission...

thx, guys

2-3" hmmm, I'll have to check the FSM for any specs, but that does seem excessive.

If it's a feeling that you have noticed on take off I would also check the motor mounts for excessive movement.

The HHR FSM didn't give any specifications pertaining to halfshaft "play", but this is from another GM technical publication.

A shudder or vibration when accelerating:

"Excessive play(more than 1/4") in either the inboard or outboard joints can sometimes cause this, but the most likely cause is a worn inboard plunge joint. These kinds of vibrations can also be caused by a bad intermediate shaft bearing on transaxles with equal length halfshafts. On FWD vehicles with transverse-mounted engines, this kind of vibration can also be caused by loose or deteriorated engine/transaxle mounts."

So as Lucky stated above, check the engine mounts too.
