Front Passenger Door Not Opening

I have a strange problem on my 07 HHR. For no apparent reason, the passenger door started not opening correctly when using the interior door handle. It pops the door latch to the first stop, so the door opens just slightly, but will not allow the door latch to fully release. When you go to the outer door handle it will open the door the rest of the way.

I took out the interior door panel thinking I could adjust the inner door handle connection rod, but it is a cable and there does not seem to be an adjustment. While fidling with the door, and lubing the latch mechanism, it started to work again. So I put the door panel back on and figured it was the lube.

A day or two later, the problem came back. This time I decided to try adjusting the striker down a bit thinking that was causing a jam. I dropped the striker about 1/8" and the door started working again. I did notice, though that the door feels as if it is falling down a bit when it opens now, like the striker was supporting the back of the door. Still, it worked now.

Then, later that day, my wife and I were out and the door stopped working again. Any ideas what could be doing this? It does not seem that it would be an electric lock issue since the outside handle always works. If the cable was bad, why would the striker adjustment fix it?

I am stumped.

Thanks in advance.
