Have been reading the posts on whining, growling, and other descriptions of front end noises. Most post indicated it could be a front hub. My 2008 HHR LS had a whine starting at about 45 miles an hour. I tried to determine which side it was coming from, but I could not tell for sure. 2 weeks ago I replaced the drivers side front hub assy. That did not cure the noise. Just today I replaced the passenger side front hub assy. That took care of the problem.

 

I think you've got it, I was trained early on if the one side is going south the other side will soon. So I have always replaced hubs, wheel bearings, shocks, struts, brake rotors and pads in pairs
