With my gas gauge reading 1/3, I made the 35 mile trip home on Friday. I figured I had plenty of gas as I was averaging 29 mpg and the mileage remaining reading was at 172. I'll get gas on Saturday I thought.

I stop at the store about 3 miles from my house and when leaving, the low fuel warning comes on. I look at the gauge and it's reading empty! So I filled up next door and headed home.

I'll keep an eye on it this week, but something seems out of whack. I was wondering if anyone else has had anything like this happen.

I am driving a one week old 2008 with the 2.4 and auto trans.

 

Mine did the same. I got between 1/3 and 1/4 , not paying too much attention to it, and next thing I know, the low fuel alarm went off.

 

Mine does the same. Itll read full for a awhile then drop to 7/8 or even 3/4. then it'll drop down again, to half or whatever. Ive even seen the bloody thing go back up. I never let go past 1/4 tank tho so Ive never had the instant empty happen to me yet.

"Inaccurate fuel gauge. Owners of 2007 Chevy Cobalt and HHR models, as well as 2007 Pontiac G5s, may come into your shop one day with a complaint that the fuel gauge in the car reads Empty, even though there's plenty of fuel remaining in the tank. The problem may be accompanied by a Low Fuel message on the dash, with DTC P0461 stored in computer memory. GM says that if no other codes are stored, you're probably just dealing with software snafus between the fuel gauge and the PCM. Reprogramming the module with revised software should take care of the situation right away. You'll find the new calibration on TIS2WEB."
