So, the light is not part of the 2LT package.
Not part of the tow package.
hmm.

Well, I don't know if it's part of the tow package or not. there is no other evidence of the tow package except a "booster"circuit board attached to the left tail light and some bolt holes where they removed some kind of tow bar/hitch. If the LED light was for the braking system of the tow package, what other parts of it should I look for and where? I'm tempted to just cut the wire with the LED light on the end of it off. But, I'd really hate to do that and still leave some active system drawing power.

The "booster" circuit board allows the HHR to drive the tail/stop/turn lights on the trailer. Many of the new cars can't handle the load of the trailer lights directly because the car's tail lights are driven from a computer and the added load would damage the driver output (or shut it down). The booster is basically a relay type of circuit which gets a separate 12V supply and the wiring to the car tail lights only act as controls to minimize any extra current draw. I have one I installed on out Town and Country minivan, near the left tail light. I have never seen this type of booster have an indicator light on the dash.

You will have to follow the LED light wires and see where they go. If there is a security system or remote starter (aftermarket) there will be a module somewhere.

If they had the trailer brake kit there would be some sort of light. There was no "tow package" available, in fact, GM seems to discourage towing with the HHR.

I think I recall hearing that some states now require trailed vehicles to have brakes controlled by the towing vehicle.

Yes, but in this case the HHR was the "towee" It was being towed behind the guys motor home, and not used too often either, I bought it in 2011 and it only had 10,000 miles on it.

Thanks for the suggestions. I will follow the wire more aggressively this weekend and see where it leads me. I can't imagine what it's linked to except maybe the brakes as Don suggested.

Look for a fuse tap at the BCM with the same colour wire.
Or a red wire that seems outta place

I know the SS was not supposed to tow stuff. But I have to check my Owners manual to confirm, because I believe there is info in it on towing w/other non-SS models.

I 'think' that green led looking light was part of some tow/braking aftermarket install. Just sayin,,...
