Head Gasket/Engine

I have a 2011 Chevy HHR with 50,000 miles on it. When I took it in for inspection I just asked if they would look to see why the temperature gauge would go up randomly. There was never any specific times it would do this it was just at random moments. Turns out when they removed the head they said it was all cracked underneath and that I needed a new engine but had to go through formalities with GM. I guess GM didn't want to pay for a new engine and are saying that it is just the head gasket now. Should I push to have the engine replaced or trust what I am being told now?? Has anyone else had problems with their head gasket or engine with somewhat low miles on their car? Prior to this (about 6 months) it was overheating and they said fuel was over spilling and said they had fixed that.

It could well be just a head gasket - unless you can get YOUR mechanic to check it out in the shop you kind of have to take their word for it. Noone here can dispute what they are saying (we can't see the engine). Just make sure they give you some warranty info in writing - and I think it should be at least a year coverage - or maybe your 5 year 100,000 mile kicks in over that???????

I would install a head gasket and call it a day. Make sure they machine the head first. Semi common problem on the ecotecs my mechanic told me. I had similar issues.
