Took my 06 HHR in for service and when I got it back the heater blower did not work on any speed. The service center did suspension work and tire repair. I checked this site for further information. I changed the resistor and made a new butyl patch out of a thicker piece of rubber ($11) and replaced the resistor from an auto supply ($45). It works fine now. I also changed the cabin hepa filter (I never knew I had one).

My car has 178,000 miles on it and I love it.

With the early 2006 HHR's- You need to change the buty cover 1st with a hard plastic cover(clean off hole & apply sealant). Use the old buty cover as a template to make the new cover.

After you have replaced the buty cover then- replace the resistor. If you DO NOT make the repairs in this order, the problem will happen again.

Ah, once again into the breach. I never did get the aluminum patch done, as the wing tape was holding so well. It still is, but the other parts of the seal failed, though, looking back here, it held for a few years anyway.
After cleaning and sealing the errant parts of the patch, I replaced the resistor with a new one. Unfortunately, it's not helping. Is there another weak spot lurking other than the resistor?

Or might I have just gotten a bad one?

OK, I've been following this thread and replaced the resistor in my '07. Lasted two weeks or so and now I have the same problem, fan only runs on high speed. Really annoying. It doesn't rain much here (in the desert) so I didn't think the problem was due to a water leak. So I ordered another resistor and before installation, I'm going to go to all the trouble to check out that butyl seal. Thanks to all for the helpful posts

Only 2006/very early 2007 have the patch.

Sorry to bring this up from the dead, but I've blown 4 resistors in the last few years. I've replaced one blower motor as well as the cowl seal. Water does not seem to be the issue anymore. Maybe it's debris on the air filter? Any tips on where to look? Thanks.

If you suspect debris on the cabin filter why not start by looking at the cabin filter, Unless you have changed it recently it has probably not been changed.
Or, are you asking where it is? There are a lot of youtubes here is the first one, the guy doesn't mention that you should empty the glove box or the contents will be on the floor :

Thanks for the reply. I'm just hoping to get ideas on how to fix the problem for good. I've seen videos where people add extra grounding to harness circuitry on some chevys. Don't know if that's an issue on the hhr.
