HHR 2007 code P0017 and C0045
Hi,
Fantastic vehicule I am close to 300 000 kilometers but I hope to drive it for 2 more years. However the older it gets the more problems there is. Code P0017 and C0045. For the C0045 that is fine we know it is the wheel sensor that is either too dirty or broken and the code is actual and not erasable. My concern is that P0017 code. Symptoms: when the engine is cold after starting it runs great and smooth, when it gets hot after a couple of miles the engine starts to wiggle when idle (at a stop or light). That's the first thing. Next, on the passenger side close to the feet the passenger reports feeling some small shocks.Third, the problem is even more present when it is humid outside or raining. Fourth, we think that playing with the gas cap did help, we bought a brand new one and perhaps it helped a little, but the problem persist. When the engine is hot it wiggle and sometimes it stall, I have to restart it.
As a side note I regularly changed to oil and filter, spark plugs are good, injectors are good, just recently changed the Intake & Exhaust Camshaft Position Actuator Solenoids. What we think is that the gas tank has a pressure problem, but before I hire a mecano to do that work I would prefer asking here in hope that something inexpensive can solve the problem.
Thanks!

I undeleted one of these I think RJ deleted both by accident.
P0017 means you need a new timing set ASAP.

With that many miles it's just stretched and worn out. The timing tensioners and guides are worn too and I'll bet that the main guide may even be coming apart.

Oops!! I did delete 2, I thought there were 3!
The rough idle could be something else, maybe a dirty throttle body. Get the timing set checked immediately! Before your engine becomes a boat anchor. Have it towed, don't operate it anymore.

The first symptom of a loose chain is rattle that goes away after warm up.
Guess where the timing chain lives. On the passenger side foot well area.
The definition of P0017 is "crankshaft position-exhaust camshaft position correlation". That means that the chain between the 2 is loose. Temperature and humidity have nothing to do with it. Now, you ask "why the exhaust camshaft?" Because in the clockwise rotation of the chain the "push" side notices slack first.

Welcome to the site, the loose chain can cause rough idle,

Lots of fun. Today my HHR 2007 was acting like it was possessed by a demon. I was on the highway and the lights was flashing, the locking system went crazy, the car was basically unresponsive and the steering wheel was very hard to turn. I eventually stalled on the right side of the road and was unable to restart the car. The towing guy gave it a boost and I was able to restart it but as soon as he took off the booster the car immediatly stopped. I should mention that the battery is original,13 years old. I talked with an experienced mecano on the phone and he explained that their might be an electrical problem with the car and that would also explain why it was even worse when it rained because of a bad connexion. I will have my car checked tomorrow. We think that it is either the battery, the alternator or a connexion.

A 13 year old battery would be the first thing to investigate, have it load tested , any parts palace can do that for free.
Sounds familiar , low voltage, then a dead cell , and that possibly burnt out the alternator.

Well, then why do you have a code indicating a timing chain? It stalled because it is getting ready to explode probably overheated.
But you know better, why did you bother asking here?
