Thumbs down HHR is junk

I bought a 2010 HHR two years ago with 62 thousand miles on it paid cash and at 82 thousand miles the timing chain went out and ruined the motor. Powers Chevy In Newport Oregon wanted 8 thousand to put in a new motor. which I don't have. I bought this HHR thinking it would be the last car I would buy, I was wrong. I am a 67-year-old man living on social security and am fighting cancer. Now I am begging for rides to get to my doctor. I feel like I was robbed and chevy HHR is just a throwaway car. I live in an Apt and had no place to store the HHR so I basically gave the HHR away to pay the 337 dollar bill Powers wanted. I had to get it off of their lot. I loved the HHR but the motor is junk.

I'm really sorry to hear about your personal health and other issues. It's not easy in your condition.

That said you bought a 6 year old car with 62k on it. Most likely you have no clue how well, or not, it was taken care of. It's very unusual for a timing chain to go on these at that low of mileage. Many of us have 150k+ with no issues. That said there is nothing Chevy is going to do to help with a 9 year old car.

Any reason you took it to a dealer instead of a good local shop?

You bought a 7 year old USED car that unfortunately broke down on you. No telling if it had been abused by it's previous owners but it probably was.
Now you're here to badmouth Chevy because you got a bad deal on a used car ?
Sorry. You're on the wrong kind of website for that. Try the BBB or some place else.

My 2011 turned 135, 000 last weekend, other than routine maintenance I've had no problems. I also have a 1940 Chevy...almost 80 years old! Sorry you're having problems

Probably could have got a used engine installed for around $2500.

Sorry , but you didn’t purchase the HHR from a Chevrolet dealer new did you?
You purchased it at a used car dealer, who bought it from who knows where , auction, could be a theft recovery or a bank repo.
The previous owner or owners might not have looked after the car, maintenance was probably not done!
So please complain about those circumstances and not try kicking GM .
Im sorry about your health and financial problems, but we have members who have over 300,000 miles on their rides , myself included and don’t have any problems.
the 2010 warranty would have expired in 2013, at 60,000 miles .
You purchased the HHR in 2017 at 62,000 miles, so did you purchase any kind of extended warranty?
Why did you think taking it to a Chevrolet dealership for repair or engine replacement was a good idea?
I’m thinking a more local mechanic shop would have been a better deal to install a used engine or repair the damage to your engine.
For future readers , please think about your objectives when your car has a problem, saving money is mostly #1.
So please don’t ignore check engine lights , rattles under the hood , check your oil every week and change it regularly.

A rep for an 8 year old car? Seriously?

I'm sorry to hear of the problems with it - but several other members have already offered good advice and comments.
If you had come here earlier when you first had the problems we could have steered in a direction that could have gotten you back on the road in a whole lot $'s than what the dealer offered.

How nice of you all to tell me what I did wrong and thank you all for telling me I was stupid for buying a used piece of junk. I agree it was a piece of junk. I wanted to get chevy attention, guess I did. I have owned many Chevys over the years and their quality is going downhill. This was a well-maintained car. oil was changed regularly and was not mistreated. sorry, I am not rich to go out and buy a brand new car. Sometimes you do what you have to do. this motor I found out has an issue with the timing chains going out. should have investigated a little sooner but it is what it is. When you don't know the other person's options he has to take you, judge!! so you all can well fill in the blanks.
