HHR still won't start even after replacing starter

Chevy HHR LT was cranking but won't now, plus white smoke
I went to a pet shop yesterday, my car was running completely fine. However, after I left the petshop, my car had like a delay but not bad when starting.. Just a small delay then it kicked on. Now it won't even click or start, and I noticed when attempted, small white smoke appears somewhere under the hood to the left side of the oil filter (no it's not the filter) it's 3-4" left of it but I can't see what's wrong. I got my alternator, my battery and starter checked and they were all good. So I'm at loss... Only thing I can think of now is wiring or solenoid problems. Please any advice or answers helps. I need my car running. Note: Engine light is not on and when I was driving it there was NO issues at all. It runs smoothly. Only when I started it, did it begin to delay and the delay got longer and longer, and now it wont start, and smoke seems to appear as I said a few inches to the left of the oil filter. My car is a 2006 Chevy HHR LT. Please and Thanks again guys!

It was running fine when it started going out. It wasn't until I got home it shut off. The guy put a deal on the battery to check the starter.

The starter motor MUST turn to be tested. Maybe you should find somebody with a different deal.
Shut off? When was that mentioned?
If it shut off My guess has changed to the wire between the starter and the alternator is fried.
Any testing before the problem does not help.

No the car had issues the guy at autozone heard it and had the car running while "testing" it I'm sure it's the starter. I've talked to a few others and they all say the starter. I'm guessing AutoZone didn't know wtf they were talking about.

The "delay longer and longer" sounds like a bad solenoid. Did it sound like it was struggling to crank? At some point they will just die. You didn't say how many miles. I had to replace my starter for a bad solenoid at about 135K.
