High pitch electronic whining sound coming from dash
Hello all,
I have a somewhat strange issue.
Mostly when my dash illumination is on at night, I hear this super high-pitched whining sound. Nobody can hear it but me it seems.
When I dim my dimmer, the sound diminishes (like that?
). When I turn it up, it gets louder.
I can somewhat trace it to my radio. At about where the AUX input goes into the bottom right corner.
It has been giving me serious headaches. I find it kind of ridiculous. I KNOW this is going to be one that a dealership is going to simply brush under a rug. What should I do? I am going to try and get my girlfriend to hear it tonight when we get a bite.
I literally get a splitting headache from it. Its been going on for a couple weeks now, as far as I can remember.
I can hear it over all cabin sounds so its a pretty intense pitch.
Your thoughts?

Sounds like he can hear the rheostat in the dash for dimer controls..electronic noise....gonna need a sound freq meter for this one....causing headaches? Yeah, your hearing things you shouldnt be.....no real prob unless they tell you to "do things"....
I had surgery at a young age where they removed part of my skull and most of my inner ear (hammer, anvil, drum, etc). I can hear televisions turn on in opposite ends of the house. I hear dog whistles. Power supplies, current oscillating through wall circuits, etc. I hear just about anything that can be considered high pitch. The low stuff is what I have a problem hearing.
When my ear starts to act up, all I can hear in half of my brain is paper crackling. It comes and goes for hours at a time.
This noise that is happening in my car is entirely unable to be ignored. It really gives me a bother. Like I said. I'll see if I can get the woman to hear it. That would give me confidence that I can prove it.
It is NOT one of those things where I'm just a nutcase and its not real. At least this time its not.

OK I think I have a handle on what is going on here. What I've found in the service manuals is a condition where the shielding on the antenna is either damaged or missing, which causes a feedback of high frequencies from the wiring harness into the audio output. Basically the antenna, if running unshielded, can feed a very high frequency signal through the system regardless of the audio source.
The other possibility if you're hearing this noise with the engine running, is an alternator whine being picked up and amplified. A whine picked up from the alternator can be amplified through the audio system regardless of the audio source, you'll hear it on everything and it will be high pitched.
The easiest way to distinguish between and alternator whine and an interference whine from the antenna/wiring harness, would be a change in pitch with engine RPM, if the pitch changes its an alternator whine.
For the antenna issue GM calls for re-routing the antenna lead and adding additional shielding in the form of nickel or aluminum tape, available at Radio Shack or an electronics supply house. For the alternator whine, you can have a Part #1224205 alternator whine filter package installed by the dealer.
Nowhere in the manuals did I find anything related to the dimmer rheostat as far as interference or noise generation. Because of the use of the audio system for warning chimes etc., even with the head unit turned "off" you can still hear interference through the system. Hope this helps.
