How to Turn Off With Stuck Key?

Not that it's happen to me just yet, but just preparing myself in case it does happen.

What is the best way to turn the car off if the key gets stuck in the ignition?

Remove either:

A) Fuel pump fuse
B) Fuel pump relay
C) ECM fuse

or disconnect battery cable

I removed the ECM fuse first and it did not kill my HHR. When I removed the fuel pump relay fuse, my HHR died when it ran out of fuel. I would recommend that you leave the ECM fuse alone as the dealer had to reflash my ECM after they replaced the cylinder lock.

Jusy my 2 cents.

Thanks Chevymgr,

So looking in the manual I see

Fuel Pump @ position 13 (underhood)

ECM @ position 41 (underhood) and position 25 (console), does it matter which one?

But, I don't see Fuel Pump Relay

I know on my 2009 SS all you have to do is look under the steering column you will see a little piece of rubber. remove that and if you stick your finger up inside you will feeling a little rubber depression if you push this in you should be able to take the key out.. I am just not sure if this works the same for each model year...

I believe the run/crank relay will do the trick (#51).

This won't help the "stuck ignition cylinder" problem. It will work on the shifter/shifter button stuck problem that was common on the 06-07 models.

It IS the same

The mechanism is the same each model year. Only the problem is different. The override mentioned won't work with the stuck key problem. The shifter/shifter button stuck problem that was common on the 06-07 models WITH AUTOMATIC TRANSMISSIONS was due to a cheap shifter design which was improved later. It didn't affect the ignition switch itself.
