How to Turn Off With Stuck Key?
HELP
This just happened to me yesterday. I was going to wash the car for the HHR show in niagara and the key stuck, so I couldnt turn the engine off. Missed half the show too.
Right now its sitting in the driveway, I had to pull the fuel pump relay to shut it off, but since the ignition is stuck in run position, the dash lights are still on and the battery will drain, so I had to disconnect the battery ground overnight.
So is this an ignition cylinder problem, or a shifter problem?
I remember a great how to post on here about some pin in the shifter that dislocates and causes problems, but I cant remember if its the same issue, and searching isnt coming up with that thread. I may try to fix it myself if thats the case.
I did get the letter about the ignition switch binding so its covered by warranty if thats the cause.

Ok, all fixed now, it was the ignition cylinder fixed under the special warranty letter, no charge.
The closest dealer said they needed the car for the day, and if it wasnt diagnosed as the specific warranty condition it would be $110 just for the diagnostic. Pffff
Next dealer said no problem, they would start on it right away. They replaced the cylinder, no mention of charges, done in literally 15 minutes. They showed me the old one with loose parts inside. Thumbs up for them.
During this incident I figured out a couple other things too. With the key in the run position, the remote locks still function, but the lights and horn dont signal it. Also when I disconnected the battery overnight, I removed the negative cable end from the body instead of from the battery as it looked easier. This happened to clear up background whine in the stereo I have had for a while since installing the aftermarket unit. Also I couldnt find the interior release for the rear hatch (although Ive done it before) so I just tripped the catch before lowering the hatch and let it stay ajar overnight so I could get at the battery in the morning.
