Issue with Passkey III / Relearn fail
Issue with Passkey III / Relearn fail
First off I would like to thank the admins for maintaining such an excellent forum. There is such a plethora of great information here. With that being said I have searched the forums but have not been able to locate anything specific to my issue.
Make: Chevy
Model: HHR
year: 2007
I am working on a friends vehicle. Her ex-boyfriend tried to bypass the ignition entirely in an attempt to gain unauthorized use of her vehicle. He cut all of the wires that go to the ignition switch, tumbler release button and transponder pickup (theft deterrent module). Its hard to tell what he tried to do with the wires although some of them were striped. In the process of removing the steering column cover the transponder pick up was destroyed.
I reconnected all the wires using high quality butt splice connectors and heat shrink and replaced the transponder pick up with a new part purchased from the dealership. When I made the connections I disconnected the battery. Of coarse the anti-theft system was triggered during this process. Now when I attempt to perform the 30 minute relearn process typical to GM vehicles equipped with PassKey III, the system does not respond as it should. While performing the 10 minute on cycles, the security light does not turn off. I've tried to perform the process with 3x 10 minute cycles, and also tried to leave the key in the on position for an excessive amount of time. The security light remains on, the vehicle will not start.
?
Is it possible that the splice connectors I used to made the connections with may have introduced resistance on the wires for the PassKey circuit which is causing it to fail? Or perhaps I am overlooking something else. I have tried to reset the computer by disconnecting the battery also...
Any advise or recommendations would be greatly appreciated. Thank you.

The ignition switch is basically a one wire switch with a resistor to tell the BCM whether to start or run (5 volts or less than 5 volts), so yes "resistance is not fewtile".
Did you check the relevant fuses? He probably tried shorting wires like a 70's car.
The Shop Manual says:
If you are replacing the TDM you must use a Tech2 with sccess to Techline to use the SPS or equivalent using the 10 minute learn procedure. The 20 minute procedure is for replacing keys.
To confuse things a little more; if you are trying to use the old key with a new TDM you need to extract info from the old (not destroyed) TDM.
It is a lot easier to use new keys.
A decent locksmith might be able to do it.
