Just bought my used HHR yesterday...
Meanwhile: I still don't buy "the lights were left on" & dead Batt.
Even my 1998 SS-10 has a 20 minute shut-off of any drain to prevent a dead battery.
If I manually turned my headlights on & left the truck, in 20 they would be shut off.. I thought I read the HHRs had the same thing also.. no ??

no.
Well, maybe not. I left my parking lights on (turned them on to see in my dad's garage) and sure enough my battery was dead in the morning. I'm used to the lights being on when I walk away from it, but it didn't dawn on me that I had turned them on myself. Surely drained my battery though and it was a %$#&* trying to get it jumped in that tiny garage and no power to open liftgate.
I had "reduced engine power" problems after getting it going...

Maybe the battery saving devices do not included the exterior lights?
The only time my battery "died" on me, I was still able to open the lift gate and connected strait to the battery directly.

I was looking at my spare tire when I jumped started mine. Maybe the battery wasn't quite dead, but I was still able to open the rear hatch.
Just caught this thread. Personally I don't see anything that points to a bad car. You can't say anything is wrong until you test the battery. Did anyone actually do that. You shonldn't just jump batteries. If the thing is dead and you just jump it you can burn your alternator out trying to charge it. Alternators are not designed to charge a dead battery or run that long constantly on. Especially new cars can do really wierd things when your supplied power is substandard.
Just my opinion

As per the owners manual (pg. 3-17), only the interior lights are on a timer to prevent battery run down. The exterior lights, if left on, will drain the battery...
As far as ruining the alternator by running it too long trying to recharge a DEAD battery, I`m not so sure. I think a good functioning alternator would run as long with a dead/recharging battery, as it would normally. The voltage regulator would just stay open all the while, until the battery was charged.
At least that`s been my experience, maybe these new veh. are different, in which case, what`s the other option?
