Lamp wiring messed up...trying to diagnose

The HHR seems to have been in a wreck at some point and I am finally getting into it to, find out why the right-front blinker and right high beam don’t work (bulbs have been replaced).

The right-front blinker/running light doesn’t come on when running lights are switched on but does come on when headlamps are on. It doesn’t function as a turn indicator.

If the headlamps are on low and I pull the low-beam relay, both the left headlamp and the right-front “running lamp” turn out. But the right headlamp stays lit. If high beams are on, only the left one works and it goes out when I pull the high beam relay. When I pull both high and low beam relays, the left headlanp and right-front blinker/running light turn out but the right headlamp stays on.

It looks to me like someone has wired the right headlamp in some odd way that bypasses the high and low beam relays and has wired the right-front running light either into the left headlamp circuit or in place of the right headlamp.

I’m thinking about pulling the fuse-box and seeing if I can figure out what they did in there but wanted to run it by everyone here before I start getting that deep into it.

What is my next best step?

Thanks for any input.

I see you have a 2006, the DRL’s are the turn signal bulb, the headlights are separate , post #3 has a diagram, thanks to Donbrew

Thanks for the reply. Apologies if I'm using the wrong terminology. What I'm calling running lights are the first position on the headlight switch above off. The next position turns on headlights.

This position doesn't turn on the headlights but just turns on the other "night" illumination.

If you mean the Automatic position, the light sensor on top of the dashboard in the middle controls that .

To clarify: 2006 HHR uses the turn signals for DRL. All other years are different. So we need to know for sure what year your car is.

Check your VIN the tenth digit should be a 6 for 2006.

Maybe the PO had wired fog lights in some odd way.

Yes mine is an 06. What is troubling me is how the right headlamp stays on low when both the high and low headlamp relays are removed. Seems impossible unless someone did some unusual rewiring on it.

That is not possible without diddling. You have the wiring diagram, The turn signals are just a wire from the BCM to the underhood fuse box then to each corner. I can't think of any easy to make them do that.
