Problems/Service/RepairsIf you have a problem with your HHR, want a tip on repairing or performing a particular service to you HHR here is the place to post!
Yes, thats why I tought this will be ok, much better than getting 5x1 liters of oil.
I would do it myself as from the youtube videos I've seen its not at all complicated, with the nut for the oil pan, and then a much bigger one for filter housing.
Only problem is I don't have any car jack whatsoever, and I can't find these things they show in the video where they just roll on 2 plastic things to lift the front of the car.
Its quite a pain in the ass to find any mechanich over here who would even look at the car, as soon as they see it they just send me away.
I even told the last one I called that I even have the filter and the oil and its quite simple, but of course then he had a problem that I already have all this stuff (I'm guessing they make the most money off of parts), but I highly doubt he would have the right filter in stock.
The HHR is an OPEL or Saab mechanically. I don't understand these Euro mechanics; not the first we have heard. Do they refuse to work on a Opel Antara? A Saab 9-5? Just different bodies.
Yes that I also found annoying since they are like that.
Luckily since then I managed to solve this problem as one of my work colleagues rents a garage and does repairs as a side job (had graduated as a mechanic so its not just guesswork). As soon as he opened the hood he said its basically Opel so he also didn't understand what they are making a fuss about.
Now he is going to change the front and rear breaks (discs and pads and also the drum breaks on the back), plus this part between the front suspensions (I have no idea what the proper name is).
My question is. I have been having the engineg light on for months now with the intermittent 'check gas cap' error message. Previous owner ordered the part above to be replaced and the told me that the engine light and the gas cap message is due to some small valve near the tank that isn't closing properly. He also ordered that part, I will be receiving it soon, unfortunately I have no picture of that part. My work colleage also wants to change that but the only thing we know is that its located near the gas tank. To avoid having to take apart half the car could anyone tell me where it could be?
Also I have been missing the front Chevy emblem and I would very much like to replace it. However I have a custom grill in front. Can someone tell me if the emblem is glued on or how exactly is it secured? Will I be able to place it on this grill?
The valve is under the car just above the rear axle on the drivers side . The part in your photo is the steering rack. The front bow tie is adhered to the stock plastic grille with double sided tape, you might be able to stick one on there.
You said "not guesswork", but guessing about the reason the CheckEngineLight is on? As far as I know cars in Europe are OBD2 and have the same interface as any Opel.
The error says "Check Gas Cap", did you check the gasket and the mating surfaces and tightness? Get a new one and be sure to turn the cap 2 clicks past tight after a fill.
When he changes the EVAP Vent Valve (behind the gas tank) tell him to be careful with the rubber seal; it wears out or gets tossed and might not be included with the new one.
By guesswork I meant he knows what he is doing as far as changing the break discs and pad goes since I wanted to avoid someone saying not to play around with that since it could be dangerous if they don't work.
I haven't told him much about the check engine light yet, that was from the previous owner. Supposedly his mechanic found why its on and it is this small valve so that was ordered before I bought the car but only arrived now. I want this changed too but I only knew its some small valve around the tank thats why I asked if someone could point out the exact location so my co-worker doesn't have to just search for it according to my vague 'around the tank' description.
I will ask if he has any error code reader to check for codes. Later the electronics will have to be checked anyway as there are a number of problems like horn not working for months now, however once a month it does decides to work just to scare me when I lock the car, ABS and handbrake lights coming on when its too cold.
The ABS light will light up and you will hear and feel the ABS activate if any of the wheels spin at a different rate than the others. like braking on ice. It will just light up if there is a problem with the system, like a bad or loose sensor.
Those lights are to warn you that the brakes are in dangerous condition, not an electrical problem.
Not a "handbrake light", it is a brake system warning light.
The horn is probably a loose relay or fuse in the fuse box. You don't need any training or tools for that.
