No these lights are probably caused by something being not water or humidity tight.
They came on multiple times during the winter. E.g. ABS light was on even though the ABS was working completely fine (braking on ice, could feel the pumping motion of the ABS). Parked car, pulled the handbrake, light with the exclamation mark in bracket in a circle (handbrake light) came on immediately. This was the only time I used the handbrake since after this even though handbrake was let out the light stayed on for about 5 days when it just decided to stop. ABS light also just randomly turned on mid drive and dissapeared as well. Also since the temperature is permanently above about 20F none of the lights came on.
Okay, GM just put warning lights on the dash to annoy you. Good theory, best solution is to put black tape over all of the warning lights. Duct tape fixes anything.
You don't know what the main steering gear is but you can diagnose the brake system without looking at it? Maybe, you are right. Maybe, you will die.
There is no "handbrake light" There is a brake system warning light that happens to light up if the handbrake is applied. In English an exclamation symbol in a triangle is used to indicate "urgent attention needed".
You see this is exactly why I put in the beginning that he is a qualified mechanic so as to avoid getting comments such as you should not be doing stuff at home, however that was regarding the changing of breaks.
I am not diagnosing anything here, I am not saying GM put things there to annoy me, I knew what the main steering gear was just not the proper name for it thats why I said I don't know the proper name for it. All I am saying regarding the brakes and lights is that something is most probably not properly insulated in the electronics.
During winter when it was constantly cold I got the ABS and the warning light occasionally. Sometimes they stopped sometimes they didn't, however like I said the brakes were working fine. ABS light was on before, during and after breaking on ice while the ABS was functioning perfectly. The only time I used the park brake the light stayed on for days. I was told to park in an underground garage where its warmer so whatever humidity got in the electronics and most probably froze would thaw. I parked there for 2 days and sure enough the warning was gone. Haven't used the park brake since = light never came back, since its over 20F no warning lights came on. I just said someone will have to check the electronics later on as these seem to be related to that. Same thing with the speedometer, I see the speed in km/h but everything else on the display in mph, fahrenheit and mpg. If I change it to metric the speedometer dial immediately shows my speed in mph. Obviously its more important to properly see how fast I am going than having C and l/100km so I just put up with it, but this also seems like a wiring problem. These are why I am saying the electronics need to be checked.
And yes exactly the part what arrived yesterday, I will tell him to be careful with the rubber seal.
