Letter from GM for ignition lock cylinder

Got a letter from GM today for my 2010 HHR. It doesn't say RECALL on it but says to call the dealer about replacing the ignition lock cylinder and the potential problems with it. Also says they will reimburse for any locks that have already been replaced. I haven't had any trouble with mine but I know many on here have. Anyone else get a letter?

firemangeorge 05-22-2012 03:09 PM

Haven't received any letters yet, but, I am going by my dealer in the morning to have them check on my 2010.

Rod Run 05-22-2012 03:14 PM

Didn't get a letter yet, but I know they did just issue a recall on my '09's ignition a couple weeks ago

Yup I got that same letter today. I'm sure it has something to do with OUR location. It says I have until may 31, 2014 to get repaired free of charge. It says I can make the appt with dealer any time. I have heard others on this forum say that they will fix for free but not until the problem occurs. Not in this case....

ChevyMgr 05-22-2012 04:15 PM

If the letter says #12045 Customer Satisfaction, a dealer will replace the switch up until the program ends on 5/31/2014.

If the letter says #12089, Special Coverage, you don't do anything unless it breaks during the 10 year 120K coverage.

metalhead52 05-22-2012 06:40 PM

Good to know. My letter has 12045. I'll have to make an appointment after we get back from vacation. 1st road trip in the HHR!

This is a Special Coverage that has been made available to certain HHR owner's. I believe it is VIN specific. If any of you would like me to research the VIN of your HHR about this please, don't hesitate to send me a private message with the VIN.

:thumb:A big Thank You to ChevyMgr for keeping us updated on this. I went by my dealer and inquired about the recall. They looked it up, said OK, and when would I like to bring it in for the replacement? Can't beat that.

Side note. A friend at the dealer did a vin status inquiry.Read it when I got home and found this part interesting:

Got my letter today about the ignition lock cylinder for my 2010 HHR. Bought it in February 2010 and this will be the first trip back to the dealer.

Haunted_Hot_Rod 05-23-2012 04:02 PM

I have to give props to Colonial Chevrolet In Norfolk, VA.

Got home today to find a check for the refund on my ignition cylinder replacement in the mail box. I was not expecting this for another 2 weeks.

Cheers
Doc

reimbursement turn around time

To the member in VA who already got their check the from dealer -

I'm curious - how long was the turn around time on your reimbursement?

I have my appointment with the dealership today at 3p. Since I had my ignition cylinder replaced last October at a different dealer, they have to do an inspection.

deliveryman 05-29-2012 09:37 PM

My key got stuck in the ignition cylinder this afternoon and I couldn't turn my car off. I headed out for the dealership to get them to check it out. It turn out that my VIN was not one that is included in the campaign plus I was told that the free replacement was up to 120,000 miles. I am way passed that. He did give me a break on the price by charging 1 hour labor instead of 2 hours. What can I say, they had me by the key chain!! I now have a new ignition cylinder.

Haunted_Hot_Rod 05-30-2012 04:34 AM

Less than a week.

I got my letter today in the mail. Made appointment for tomorrow afternoon
to get ignition changed.Glad I can get it changed before it goes bad.
Thanks GM,
Happy HHR_ing

eaglefreak138 05-30-2012 11:29 PM

Everyone should make sure if their HHR is included or safe. Last year I had to drive my HHR to the dealer after hours, pull the fuel pump fuse to shut the damn thing off and leave it overnight. I got home from work and the key wouldn't turn off then just plain came out of the ignition and the car wouldn't stop running. That after I just filled up with gas lol. Prevent this situation for yourself and get it done.

(tabs) 05-31-2012 12:34 AM

what years/models does this include?

jimfet 05-31-2012 12:38 PM

Got my letter today. I have a 2009, that I bought new. I have had that happen to me 2 or 3 times. It would finally unlock. The 2003 CTS Caddy I had would do the same thing though. I figured it was a GM thing. Like the gas needle going all over the place.

I will schedule mine for next week tomorrow.

Did you pay for the previous times you had to have this fixed in your HHR?

SS Panel 05-31-2012 04:43 PM

I got the Letter Tuesday.

I would say get it replaced. I did not have any problems with my 09 for 250,000 miles and then a couple of days ago it happened without any warning.

Sidecardog1 05-31-2012 10:36 PM

I got my letter for the '10SS in Wednesdays mail, called Cecil Clark Chevrolet 8:30 this morning. They had the part in stock and said come on down. Dropped it off at 10:30 and it was ready at 12:40. Car was running great before but I had it done anyway since I didn't want to risk having an episode with it. The keys remain the same before and after. Get it done and have peace of mind. Usually, when you turn the key on you hope it will start, we shouldn't have to worry if it will stop when we turn the key off !

frank6060 06-01-2012 06:15 AM

Thanks for advising guys,I'll get it changed out. I just hope they identified the problem and they're replacing it with an improved switch and not the same part hoping for the best.

SS Panel 06-01-2012 03:20 PM

Yesterday I stopped at Suburan Auto Group in Sandy, OR to talk to the Service Department about changing out the switch, I have to say what a helpful & nice group of people & since it was close to 5:00pm the Service staff was leaving for the day a group of them walked over & were checking out the Panel, maybe they hadn't seen one before.

Jeda13 06-01-2012 04:49 PM

My '08 has been acting up. Put the key in, won't turn. Jiggle the steering a bit, sometimes frees it up. Are these the symptoms? Anyone know if the recall includes the 08?

Jim

I would work with it myself, until it freed itself.

whitelightnin 06-01-2012 08:39 PM

I just got the same letter. I've had trouble with mine since I've had it.

pnf44 06-02-2012 07:13 AM

2009 Wouldn't turn off

I had trouble a while back with my 2009, 2LT. I got home on a Friday and could not turn the car off. Luckily, the dealer is near and they could look at right away. It sat, running for almost two hours but they changed out the cylinder, no charge.
It would have been bad any other time. It worked out well but it could have been anywhere and without a dealer in sight. I lucked out.

tntwolt 06-02-2012 10:39 AM

i got one and will make appt. also service air bag light on most time now and maybe they can catch it this time

Thank you for the additional information. Do you plan to take the vehicle into the dealership to get this taken care of?

Thank you for sharing what you experienced with your vehicle and the dealership. I am glad they were able to get this taken care of at no cost to you. Are you still smooth sailing with this?

Cost is $110.13

When the dealer service record for the replacement of the ignition lock cylinder was added to the my.chevrolet.com web site it indicated the cost to be $110.13. Thought those of you who have to pay for the repair yourself might be interested in the cost. GM covered my replacement through program 12045.
