Sounds to me like a wiring concern. In your owners manual there is a way of opening your tailgate manually, if you desperately need to. You will have to lower your rear seats and climb in. There are oval pop outs on the inside of the tailgate, the centre one is the one to remove.

Has your HHR been in any rear accidents?

Here's a "how to" thread on the emergency tailgate release that Tyler mentioned...

https://www.chevyhhr.net/forums/how-tutorial-library-21/how-manual-liftgate-release-8540/

If the fuses check out, then the dead brake lights and hatch do suggest wiring harness damage either accident related, or due to improper mods made for a hitch if equipped...or a custom audio system.

we can open it the 'manual' way no problem,, just not the proper way... it may have been in a accident,, small dent

Anyone know what the voltage should be on the brake pedal sensor? ours is at a 7

Do your rear license plate lights work? If not, with the other lights and rear hatch lid not working, I would look for a disconnected or damaged connector in the wiring harness.

We believe that it is that,,, we are now in search of a BCM C1 connector diagram,,, have a manual on order,, but hope to not have to wait for it to come in to fix the problem

Shoot a PM to "donbrew", he should have that on a PDF, if Don doesn't have it I can e-mail you a copy after I replace the power supply on my desktop tomorrow.

P.S. to the forum.
