Problems/Service/RepairsIf you have a problem with your HHR, want a tip on repairing or performing a particular service to you HHR here is the place to post!
Daughter always hits things and runs car out of oil (3 times)
last time this cause a chewed up timing guide and bolt.
installed new timing kit and everything ran fine for about 6 months.
** Present time - Cracked oil pan caused a plethora of codes. Replaced oil pan - old one was caked in metal shavings and sludge. Pick up tube blocked up.
replaced - vvt solenoids, both cam sensors, crank sensor, and MAP sensor, spark plugs.
checked timing chain and guides - all good
Cleaned intake manifold, throttle body, and MAF sensor, and all injectors.
all codes went away except P0300 - random misfire
car starts every time but sounds bad and runs rough with poor acceleration.
went back in and found a couple loose rockers so I replaced all lifters.
car is still running the same and keeps the P0300 code.
is this enough information for someone to help? I’m thinking this has to be valves or rings at this point unless I’m missing something! If so, being something I’ve never done, is this worth digging further into?
Lifters? Is this an HHR?
P0300 does NOT mean random misfire it means misfire detected. The way the computer detects misfires is by the crankshaft variation.
Metal shavings in the oil pan usually come from bearing getting starved of oil.
P0300 can be loose coil connectors, corroded coils . Loose injector connectors, dirty fuel rail .
Id be concerned about the metal chips in the old oil pan, how is the oil looking now after an oil change?
what spark plugs did you install? AC Delco 41-103 Iridium? Others can be a problem!

Yes this is an HHR! 2007 - 2.4
P0300 means misfire detected across multiple cylinders (random cylinder misfire) from everything that im seeing.
Im not concerned about the metal shavings because I'm sure it was from the first timing guide and bolt being eaten up due to their being plastic present as well. New oil looks good, no shavings.
Ive check all coil through bench test and unplugging one at a time. Everything seems normal. Ive cleaned the fuel rail and all injectors. Bench tested all injectors and spray patterns as well as new o ring kit. Those are the plugs I installed. New oil is looking good after running and draining.
The metal and plastic in the oil pan were from the previous timing guide and bolt being chewed up. Found part of the bolt by the pick up tube.
P0300 does NJOT necessarily mean a real misfire, unless accompanied by another P03xx code. It means that something is causing the camshaft spin irregularly Usually that has to do with the timing chain. You have been reading incomplete/uninformed things. If there was a real misfire you would have P0301, P0302, P0303 or P0304.
Was there metal on the magnetic drain plug? The guides are plastic and no bolt could get ground up in the oil. Most of the engine is aluminum. I don't know what you mean by "lifters" the ecotec has rollers
I have no idea why you would have replaced all of those parts. If you changed the crankshaft sensor or the ECM without having the crankshaft variation relearned that could cause the code.
How is it possible to run out of oil? HHRs don't normally burn much oil and regular oil changes according to the oil life monitor should be enough. I let mine go 2 times (about 23,000 miles) with maybe 1 qt used. The oil life monitor lights up at about 12,000 miles. You should be using Dexos labelled oil, that is synthetic or semi-synthetic.
I won't even go into old man mode and say "teach that child to have some respect for expensive machines".. I get mad every time I hear "I only know how to put gas in the tank".
I appreciate your input, however, I feel like you aren't reading through the entirety of the post! The car ran out of oil because she cracked her oil pan. I hear you on it taking more than putting gas in it! This car is a constant project and mostly user error haha!
The HHR 100% does have lifters. They are hydraulic lifters that the rollers ride on top of.
I replaced all of those parts because it had a corresponding code and I was trying to track down the issue. Ive managed to get every code gone except P0300. I have no idea what the issue is but it has a rough idle, sounds rough (Increasing with RPM), and poor acceleration. Car will start and run without stalling.
How do I go about getting the ECM to "relearn" crankshaft variation since I did replace it?
And so now that we have addressed that line of reasoning, let’s look at the valve train, the camshaft has roller followers that push on the rocker arm to push the valve open. Not usually a problem area unless the valves got slightly bent when the upper front guide bolt let go. This would cause issues with compression and the engine won’t run very smoothly, if at all.
