Hey marine......

Can't tell you why but........

The guys at GM Desert Proving Ground always used the 250 F mark as a indicator to change oil and trans. fluid (way back, on a trip UP to the high country, I experienced engine temps. of 235 F. I changed the oil and trans. fluid as a precaution....cheap insurance and piece of mind). Heat does affect oil products and is ONE of the criteria the OLI uses.

When your engine was rebuilt/replaced new oil was installed so it would be "fresh"....no contaminants, etc. But as suggested by crafty, you could get an oil analysis from Blackstone for $22.50...$10 more for a TBN. The break down and results would provide a good indicator.

But as someone else suggested, I would discuss this with the dealer regarding additional warranty or replacement.....you're having to many problems. Especially if it continues.

Good luck.....

thanks guys for all the feed back... I was under the impresion that if a block overheated then there was a very good chance that the head would warp causing problems down the road. Correct me if I'm wronge.

WTF... now I'm really pissed

I'm so pissed... just a little while ago I went to the post office to check my po box, before anyone asks... yes I know it late but I am raising two kids (11,13) by myself and the only free time I have is when thet go to bed. Anyways, with that said, I always leave the car running while I run in and check the mail (also thought this would b a good time to see if the car would overheat). Well 15-20 minutes into going through all my junk mail I look outside and see smoke coming from the car and a pudle of radiator fluid under the car. As I ran outside the thought of this happening again just started to infuriate me. I turned the car off and imidiatly checked my temp gauge. As I scrolled through the display it read "cooling mode on" and when I got to the temp, it read 298....WTF... am I missing somthing!!!! How many times will this happen to one car? Fustrating is not even the word that discribes how I am feeling at this moment. Anyways, I let it cool down and drove it back home very quickly, I am not about to b stuck at the post office till the tow truck decides to get here. Well I called road side and the estimated time of arrival is 1 hour... dang I am glad I came home. Sorry to vent alittle but like I said.. I'm beyond FUSTRATED!!!!

Okay, now that I've calmed down alittle... do I have to worry about engine damage? And yes the cooling fan was on... I heard it, sounds kinda funny compared to the original one but yes it is working. I didnt check the fluid in the radiator, I figuared the dealer checked that when they repaired it today...

My opinion......

No apology is necessary for your venting.

You're in a tough situation. A single parent with 2 kids, a vehicle that is needed to get those kids to school and you to work, a vehicle that is needed to meet doctor and other medical obligations, a vehicle that is needed just for transportation to amusements. AND IT DOES NOT PROVIDE RELIABLE TRANSPORTATION OR MEET IT'S MARKETED UTILITY TO DO SO.

I would speak with your dealer MANAGEMENT, Chevrolet Customer Service and request a Factory/Manufacturers Representative meeting. Be cool and considerate, explain that you have been patient through all this trouble but your patience is not worn very thin and the reliability of the vehicle is in question. It cannot go on any longer and mention the amount of time the dealer has had the vehicle for the repairs. The vehicle does not provide trustworthy transportation and indicate you may need to talk with an attorney. And request a buy back. GM will low-ball, offering extended warranties, free "this or that". But hang in. I have seen your type of situation rewarded/awarded in favor of the vehicle owner.

But you may NEED to talk with an attorney (given GM's present financial situation which results in being stubborn) if you get no adequate response from GM and the dealer management.

Good Luck...

Word. It's time to lemon-law that ride. The engine can take that kind of heat, but enough's enough. It was the dealership's fault the first time they killed the original engine, and it sounds to me like they probably either didn't purge the engine when they filled it up with coolant, or they nicked/kinked the radiator hose when installing the new fan. Either way, leaking coolant is a fire hazard and they're damn lucky they aren't facing a massive lawsuit over a burned up car and family.

Don't screw around, ask around your area for a good civil litigation/arbitration attorney and get a buy back. I'd imagine you'd definitely qualify by now. When it's all said and done, I have a feeling GM's going to recuperate the loss out of that particular dealership's hind quarters. With dealerships being cut like crazy, they are in no position to make GM look bad, cost them money, or make potentially lethal mistakes on customer vehicles.

Time to get GM's Arbitration division, the BBB, and an Attorney involved. I had this happen to me back in 1995 with an S-10. To make a long story short. GM replaced everything under the hood including the engine and the service manager was fired. I would suggest taking it to Ole Ray Childress at Lawrence Marshall but he shut his doors a few weeks ago. Good luck man!

Well guys/gals, I am a loss for words at the moment, I have been geting the run around all day from the dealer that my poor hhr was towed to. First thing this morning, the service advisor called me and asked me what happened, I camly explained the last couple of weeks and that it had over heated the night before. He informed me that the coolant reached 298* and said "damn thats hot, we need to find out if the motor got damaged" (how do they know ho hot it got?)anyways, I waited all morningto get a call.. nothing... I called them about 1:30 in the afternoon and all he said wuz that the tech was still diagnosing it, I asked about a rental and he informed me he would "get back to me" at the end of the day... Am I missing somthing? shouldnt they give me a rental at my convinience and not theres? that really pissed me off... So I contacted the dealer where the cooling fan wuz replaced and asked if they can do sumthing about it. She called the dealer and wuz informed that there is NOTHING WRONGE with my hhr. she freaked... so she sent her tow truck to pick it up. She called me telling me what the screwed up dealership had informed her. When my hhr got to the dealer on the tow truck i wuz already there. The tow truck driver informed me that they told him that it was really low on coolant, duuuuu.. the coolant came out in the parking lot last night.... I cant understand how they can say nothings wronge with it when clearly there is!!! Anyways, I informed them that I would go ahead a take my hhr since the other dealer said it wuz fine.... then she promply gave me her tow service's number and said" when u do break down again, call them and they will tow it directly to us, and if we have to put a new motor in it ... so be it, westside chevy should have looked into the problem more closely". well on the way home, the temp needle wuz alll over the the place... going down to 160* and all the way up 255*... and thats only driving it about 8 minutes....

The Tech II scanner pulled that information. It will also tell them how many miles ago it was when it hit 298°.

Umm, with your coolant temp all over the place I would put money on the head gasket or head is f'd up after overheating. They owe you another motor or car at this point. It sounds rediculous! Good luck.
