Question No compression 2008 hhr

Mechanic told me I have no compression for my spark plugs and now I need to get another engine. I only know a little about giving cars so this sounds bogus.

Welcome to the site, it could be a broken timing chain , caused bent valves , it could be broken piston rings, so what happened that tempted you to take it to that particular mechanic? A CEL? It stopped running? What?

Yes, it stop running. They did a code scan and it was P0016 so as they started to check things they notice no compression on either of 4 cylinders

You might be lucky and the chain just broke with no other damage. It is pretty easy to check that.

They suggested to get another engine without checking anything else. They said since there's no compression to either cylinders most likely pistons are bent or broke and other stuff as well. So said so why pay to get all those things checked out just for them to tell me that I need another engine. It just sounds fishy to me

The starter would still cause the pistons to go up and down, creating compression. If the timing chain broke, the valves would not change position, if they are open, they stay open, and you get no compression.

I'm not sure, but I don't think it's possible for all cylinders to have valves open at the same time, so if they are not bent, you should have compression in some cylinders. You probably have some bent valves.

The pistons might be a little dinged, but are probably fine. You will need either a valve job, a head, or an engine. Pulling the head off will show the damage.

So a timing set, (you should also replace the water pump and balance shaft chain set) head work, and labor.

Or a used, rebuilt, or new engine, and labor.

Price both options, and make a decision.
