No power steering above 10MPH only
No power steering above 10MPH only
My 2006 HHR LS 2.2L, looses power steering after 10MPH only, every time I drive it. I have driven in my neighborhood streets many times with no power steering failure as long as I stay below 10MPH. As soon as I exceed 10MPH driving straight, and turn the steering wheel slightly to the right the power steering fails. Every time I stop and start the engine the power steering works fine until I exceed 10MPH again. This condition has not changed for a week of checking wires, fuses, and sensors. If anyone has experienced this 10MPH limit to power steering, I would appreciate any tips. I Have searched the site without resolution for this issue. Thank you to ALL HHR owners.
Yep here is a link to a thread here about it. I just put some new links in the first post, to replace the dead link.

I appreciate your comments, and support. I have decided to keep this HHR as a mater of STYLE. These cars are not like any thing being made today. The following and devotion to these unique autos is evident in this site among others. This is the second HHR I have owned. I had a 2010 that my wife drove until 142,000 miles the engine started knocking. I like to do as much repair work as possible by myself. I have checked at the dealers for availabilities of some parts. This weekend I am going to purchase OBD2 scanner to further diagnose the issues with this HHR. I have seen many issues with the EPS on HHR's and cobalts. I am not deterred from ownership by the issues or wear and tear on these cars. All cars have issues, and normal wear and tear. I congratulate you ALL on your site and services.
Did you see the references to FREE extended warranty for the life of the car repair?
Have all of the recalls been dine? https://www.chevyhhr.net/forums/gm-r...-status-50716/
I have never heard of a problem like you describe. Is it new or just new to you?

I did print the recall letter, although I did not see where a 2006 HHR would be included. I do not believe the recalls have been done on this HHR. I have had the 2006 since May 2017. It was operating fine until last week. It developed this loss of power steering 10 days ago. I drive it daily, and the conditions have not changed. I checked the wiring at the fuse box on the right side of the console last night without any changes. I drove around the neighborhood streets at less than 10 MPH for over 40 minutes, the power steering never had a loss. I then drove faster than 10 MPH five straight times the power steering failed every time. I am beginning to think the power steering control module may be the failing component.
What recall? There is an extended warranty for the power steering motor on all HHRs. The recall I was thinking of was the ignition I provided a link for you to check the recall status.
If your key has a round key ring hole the recall may have been done, if it has an oblong hole it has not been done.
You are describing the symptoms of either.

I have checked fuse inside car, and outside in engine compartment. I drove the car again today, same conditions. I checked several wires for shortages. Still has power steering under 10MPH, and still fails the minute I drive over 10MPH. My Daughter passenger thinks it is funny when the power steering displays, and the chime rings.
Today I purchased a used power steering column, with the motor and power steering control module included. I started with replacing the motor. On the test drive the power steering did not fail at any speeds. I want to thank you all for the perspectives you have provided. I hope my experiences help other HHR owners that want to repair, and keep their cars since they have a unique STYLE all their own.
