ODB-2 Plug Had a jumper wire

I just bought a 2006 HHR 2.2 automatic and out of curiosity I plugged my ODB-2 Scanner to it just to see if anything came up. Well I could not plug it in and when I looked close at the plug I found a paper clip across pins 3 and 8. I removed the clip and saw no new lights anywhere and proceeded to check for codes. I found no codes but am concerned as to why this clip was across the two terminals of the ODB-2 plug in the car.

Maybe someone can answer this for me.

Thanks

Mike V.

In the pre-OBD II days, you could jumper 2 pins on the OBD connector and put the ECM into a mode where it flashed the error codes using the check engine light.

Someone may have tried to do this on the HHR and left the jumper in place when it didn't work.
