With 150K I would like to suggest that you check your oil level while you are filling up the gas tank. Maybe not needed every time, but once a month for sure. You standing there doing nothing anyways, there is usually paper towels at your conveinence.

I replaced valve cover gasket about 1,000 miles ago, and when checking the oil level today noticed that there was a noticeable leak around PCV hose. The hose is properly clamped. Also there were a lot of deposits in the tube. I guess that is where the oil was going, just like you guys mentioned. Is there anything I can do about this?

Did you wash the valve cover out, I soaked mine from Oldblue’s 2.2 over night in warm water and Dawn to get at the oil and stuff on top of the splash baffle plate. It cleared up the oil in the PCV tube problem.

I did even think that step was necessary. I don't think I want to go through that process again.
I've read that oil in the pcv valve hose is normal, as that's what passes through the hose, oil blowby. Would that mean I don't need to worry about oil in the tube, and just get a better clamp for the hose? |
Replace the hose and clamp, you should be just fine, here’s what I determined

Thanks for sharing this! I would really love to try oil catch can. I already ordered this one:

There is no pressure, so zip ties work great

I check my fluids pretty regularly.
Don't forget to check your engine coolant in the reservoir tank, I check this cold.. My coolant level was down by 1 ounce. (I am also a lil fussy about fluids being precisely on the full mark, which I marked on mine back in 2009 ).. Then the brake fluid level in the master cylinder. Windshield washer fluid reservoir. |
Just finished installing oil catch can. I think it took me longer to clean all this junk up than to install the can. After seeing this, I think these cans should be mandatory.
https://cimg5.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.che...050d41bfa6.jpg This is the setup I used to install it. I used 1/2 in tubing. 3/8 in was too small. https://cimg4.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.che...3c68497b45.jpg https://cimg6.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.che...f44f71c486.jpg Thanks, Oldblue, for pointing this out. Sleeper, every time I check my coolant, it is always low. I have no idea where it goes. I fill it up in the reservoir up to the full mark, and it then just goes down all the way to the bottom and stays there. No leaks. |
Maybe no external leaks but a head gasket issue and the coolant is burned off in a combustion chamber.
Plug the spark plugs and look for one or two that’s different from the others |
