From the sounds of it sleeper, I think he's already at the point where the dealer is doing the work, unless I'm misreading his post.

Note that the Ecotec engine is a 4 piece case; Upper; Cylinder Head; Lower; Oil case. They tell me the "Lower" crankcase seal (silicon bead) has failed. OK no biggie...WRONG!!!
Question: what is higher than the cyl head ?? Cam cover ?

& lower is the case, then the oil pan........... no ??

I know it a pie in the sky thought, but I'd love to see some photos of the failed seal and any damage to the castings that might have caused it.

I haven't authorized the repair as yet. $1,500 is a big chunk; I need new Tires; Struts & Shocks; Brakes; alignment; + I already bought springs. With 75000 miles, I'm wondering if I should trade it now before spending another $2,500. If I spend that am I going to get another 4 1/2 - 5 years out of it?

I'd take it somewhere else and have it looked at, a second opinion never hurts, its not unheard of for a service department to misdiagnose an issue.

I agree wholeheartedly! I haven't had much confidence in a dealership's service department in many years. A couple years ago, I had one dealer refer me to repair shop. Now, that gives you confidence. Plus, usually an outside source can do the same job cheaper.

How is it all over your trans too, then? Something is fishy. Has your OIL LEVEL GONE DOWN????

How about TRANS FLUID?

I agree with the guys - a trip to another dealer or even an experienced guy. Peer agreement brings the truth.
When the next "expert" will announce its verdict, firmly say: "I want to see it with my own eyes." Let this repairman carries you to the repair area, let show lubricant leakage (damage, defects), as evidence on which it was his opinion.
Thus, you will have your personal opinion about the problem and an opportunity to make a photo.
I admit the possibility of a serious (expensive) problems. But this is unlikely, most likely trivial defect of gasket.
I'm sorry, but have to admit - The U.S. is not very professional repairers and love of undeserved money.
