Oil life monitor - how fast does your percentage drop

Since my last oil change, I have been watching the oil life monitor to see how the dealership oil stands up compared to the factory fill oil.

I had the oil changed 3 weeks ago and have figured out that the oil life is currently dropping 1% for every 100 km (66 milees) I drive.

Not sure if that's good or bad, but it is not holding up as well as the factory fill did.

Can't answer the "beginning oil life" question.

But, I have been told that oil life is cummulative. Otherwords the "older, dirty" it gets the less life it has. So probably the "bottom end" (50%-10%, for example)of your OLM will go by faster.

I had mine changed at 5K and at 10K, and both times it had about 35% remaining.

I've only had two oil changes so far.......

The first done by dealer and the 2nd done "at home" and changed to M1 synthetic. Can't say for sure, didn't pay much attention after the 1st change, but it does seem that the percent is dropping faster after the "at home" change.

Please note that this thread is about how fast your oil percent is dropping, NOT when you change your oil. There are several other threads relating to that.

How low do you let the oil life get?

The OLM does not "know" what kind of oil is in the sump. The type of oil you put in makes no difference in how quickly the OLM declines. The OLM measures engine revolutions, engine temperature, and other factors to determine when oil should be changed. Assuming your dealer uses goodwrench oil (not necessarily the case), the factory fill and dealer fill may be the same oil.

The OLM on my car trips between 9,000 and 12,500 miles depending on the temperature (it decreases much more quickly in the winter due to the cold temps).
