The TSB is too long and the system will not let me post it here. besides it has lots of pictures that really need to be seen with the text to understand it. I could email it or if you can talk the administrator into letting PDF files be posted I could post online.

I haven't seen anything for that one, seems to be common, I'm waiting for someone to claim a permanent fix before I try to get mine fixed. One thing that's worrying me at the moment is that I seem to have developed a timing chain thrash and this is why I'm worried - http://www.cobaltss.net/forums/showt...t=timing+chain

MODELS:
206-2007 CHEVROLET COBALT, COBALT SS
2006-2007 CHEVROLET HHR
2006-2007 CHEVROLET MALIBU
2007 PONTIAC G5
2006-2007 PONTIAC G6
2006 PONTIAC PURSUIT(CANADA ONLY)
2006-2007 PONTIAC SOLSTICE
2006-2007 SATURN ION REDLINE
2007 SATURN SKY

BUILT BETWEEN 4/1/06 - 11/1/06
WITH ANY OF THE FOLLOWING ENGINES
2.0 ENGINE (VIN P - RPO LSJ)
2.2 ENGINE (VIN D OR F - RPO L61)
2.4 ENGINE (VIN B OR P - RPO LE5)

The following diagnosis might be helpful if the vehicle exhibits the symptom(s) described in this PI.

CONDITION/CONCERN:

On rare occasions, a tick or rattle noise may be heard from behind the front cover of the engine and/or pieces of a timing chain roller may be found during an oil change. This may be the result of a timing chain concern.

Non-heat treated timing chain rollers were randomly installed in the assembly line hoppers. He advised that this happened sometime between 4/1/06 - 11/1/06 so it can randomly affect late 2006 - early 2007 models.

RECOMMENDATION/INSTRUCTIONS:

If this concern is experienced, inspect the timing chain for missing or damaged timing chain rollers. If a missing or damaged timing chain roller is found, replace the timing chain and gears using the part numbers currently listed in the parts catalog.

Please follow this diagnostic or repair process thoroughly and complete each step. If the condition exhibited is resolved without completing every step, the remaining steps do not need to be performed.
Not sure of the provenance of this claim though. I can't find any trace of this anywhere else.

Thanks. Quite a smorgasbord of possible issues, I would have guessed at #5, the rear arm bushing, but mine look OK, (just looked, it's only 16F outside), the bushings are centered in the aluminum arms - when did they change from steel stampings? #6 would have been my other guess (but doesn't apply) but I looked at those some time ago, there's no sign of movement or contact.

Most can be found on this board or elsewhere by searching.
I think I was on edmunds.com and it wouldn't give you the correct TSB number.

I have the low speed rattle in the column. I called the dealer and they didn't know there was a TSB on this problem.

I have an extended warranty that should cover this but a deductable of $100.

Cost was given to be:
Replacement: about $400
Lube it: about $95

If they just lube it, I'll have to pay right at the deductable so I say replace it, what do you think?

I guess they are replacing the intermediate shaft or lubing it, which seems odd to me because we have rarely had to do that on an HHR. That is more on the bigger cars and the SUV's. But if they are speaking of the intermediate shaft, lubing will last only so long (4,000-10,000 miles) and then the noise will return again. So it depends on how long you are going to own it. The new shaft should solve the noise for good if that is the problem!

If they think the noise is coming from the column I would lean toward a column replacement, but I am not there to hear it so I can't make that call. I would ask the service advisor to road test it with you after repairs and before paying the $100 to verify it was fixed. If not get him to replace the column at the same time so you can get it all done for one deductable.
