P0016 code after timing chain tensioner installed
Well the old tensioner was all intact when i was at the shop were it as installed i seen it myself to make sure .. I leaning more or less toward the chain being loose or slack i mean the motor was shaking before i have the crankshaft seal replaced because it leaking oil and then two weeks later had the new tensioner installed by the shop ...The motor has 170,000 on it as we speak and i have taken care of it but the chain should last a lifetime .. anyway there is no noise on start up and i drove the car yesterday over 60 miles on the highway no misses runs great but there is something going on when idling maybe skip a tooth not sure ..plus the ce is on with the code p0016 i can clear it it will stay off but when i start it the second time the light comes on ...If is the chain what is the best kit to replace it and is it worth it to do with that mileage? i really don't want a car note..thanks to people trying to help me out
It does seam like the chains do last, what has come apart (At least that I've seen) is the plastic guides, and the tensioners. But if you are going to tear it down that far, might as well switch it out. If the light was not on before and is now, I would think something went wrong during the repair. I think I would still pull the valve cover and verify cam timing.
On the scanner you have access to, can you get cam time data?

Thanks jz will have the chain replace and water pump to because it is chain driven and it has been good so far well here are the part no for 2007 2.2 and going with cloyes timing kit #9-4201s and victor reinz timing cover gasket kit which has the water pump gasket part no jv5068 and a water pump gates #43529 .. The guy who does engines for the dealership all day is going to charge about 300$ for labor which i think is a fair price ... Im old school to this stuff not like it used to be make both marks line up on the chain like old chevy motor and ready to go ,lol .So if anybody has any say on the parts let me know first time having it done ...Thanks for help from whooper and donbrew which makes this car worth keeping
Ok my guess when the shop replaced the tensioner the new style they did not soak it in oil and just started the car ,according to the ecotec forums you should soak it in oil and then push the tip in out tell it builds pressure and then install , so i am assuming the tensioner did not release until it built pressure and probably skip a tooth but not sure until we open the valve cover for sure and check the timing which in turn the p0016 code..anyways i had that chain rattle before the new tensioner was installed ,but word to wise ....
Tooth skipping should only occur if the engine is turned counter-clockwise. $300 labor for new chain, guides and water pump is a good deal. I saw that kit on Ebay, it seemed very deal at $137!
It includes a new tensioner, maybe you could sell it. It does not seem to include new bolts for the sprockets and dampener, so you'll probably need to add around $90.

Well i seen the bolt for the damper part no 11589123 bought it two weeks ago for 3.70$ from gm parts direct and i got to check prices for the cam sprocket bolts that hold the plates ..I was wondering if the reuse the damper bolt put a little lock tite on it will it work ? Not trying to be cheap but the bolt is only two weeks old ..
NO! supposedly torque to fail, same with the sprocket bolts. I did see a kit on E Bay that did include the bolts, I did not look very hard that was just the first page of "best match" for "HHR timing chain kit".
Ok i got the timing chain set today cloyes looks like a good set plus they include the cam gear bolts yea i a happy camper only thing next is getting the crankshaft bolt from the stealership ,hold my hands up when i walk in ,lol anyway why does gm make torq to yeild bolts ? I mean more scrap metal which i think is bull #$%^ you should be able to reused if there a heavier grade just plain stupid , well heart surgery for the hhr friday
