planetary gear fried

So I had a thread about my ball joint/cv....I changed out the cv joint but it wasn't my only problem. The planetary gear in my transmission is done for...I got an estimate for $1400 and I guess I gotta do it...I mean I love the car to pieces. Some of you SS guys spend way more time at the track then me, use slicks and other things....I only put 30,000 miles on my ss so who knows who did what the first 35,000. Anyhow pictures to come when I get out of work...

Ouch - yeah, you gotta do it - the price doesn't seem too bad. Lookin forward to the pics in a morbid sense . Good luck with it.

The trans shop guy told me to stop by and see it, but all he had done was removed the drain pan...so this is all I got....I also emailed GM to let them know what happened, not that they are going to care after they find out about the 24 psi of boost she was holding....ON A POSITIVE NOTE...Forge is finally sending my the "yellow" spring that I asked them about in the summer(not that I am all that worried about that right now)

I also asked if there was any possibility of "beefing" up the the tranny, and I was told there wasn't much of an option...he also said that the tranny was the "same as the old cavalier" tranny...not that they were bad, but they are not designed to hold the torque from the factory, and probably not going to hold the boost of the GMTU...I told the tranny shop about the 24 psi of boost and thats when told how the tranny was no different from the 120 hp cavalier....Kind of $hitty on GM's part to not do any work to these transmissions holding twice the hp/tq....

Here ya go: (only pic I could get)

Keep us posted man - at least it looks like there is some progress. Good luck.

That reference to the Cavalier tranny doesn't sound quite right - I thought the tranny originated, or was designed to handle some of the v-6's.

You could be right....but he made it sound like it wasn't anything special. I know some other guys have done way more, spent more time at the track, slicks....etc. kinda weird if mine was the one to go.

On hold with GM as I type...I called them looking for some sort of financial assistance (figured it wouldn't hurt). who knows, maybe they are willing to back their "performance" product considering this could of happened with the GMTU...Its a shot in the dark...I am guessing nothing will happen because it is at a independent shop (who are already fixing the car) and not a stealership...updates to come

30:13 was the length of my phone call...I was on hold probably 25 minutes of the time...I was very nice, and respectful and still got nothing...To paraphrase: "GM is willing to work with you to a certain extent, considering the mileage of the vehicle(66,000). But we (GM) will not reimburse customers for having work done at a private or independent shop."

So what I gather, I take it to GM to have the transaxle repaired/replaced. I pay upwards of $4500-$5000 for this to be fixed and GM would be willing to help with SOME of the repair??? If they didn't cover 75% of it or more, I wouldn't be getting any help really...

PLUS with the problems I have been having at the local GM shops...I am done taking vehicles to them...I had a wheel bearing(on my SS) I thought was going...turned out to be loose lugs, and they didn't find anything wrong...Cost me $85 for them not to even touch the wheel on my car or drive it...

My mothers trailblazer just got fixed (float level sensor in gas tank) on a recall and leaked gasoline all over RT 219 in wny...had to get it towed...

Anyhow I'm done ranting...Just been a couple of stressful days bumming rides to work and whatnot....

Not trying to throw a scare into you, but usually when a planetary gear fails
as bad as yours did (going by the picture), it has a tendancy to take out other hard parts in the tranny.
Has the shop torn it down completely and checked the rest of the internals?
I hope you get off easy as far as the parts are concerned. I would just ask them to double check every thing else while they're in there.
