Pop Noise when turning Steering Wheel (axel?)
Pop Noise when turning Steering Wheel (axel?)
Hey all. I've seen similar instances of these noises pointing to the steering shaft, but I can't figure out if that's it or not.
I made some videos in hopes that someone could help me track it down.
I've replaced the control arms, sway bar links, in/out tie rods, and sway bar bushings.
Also did 3 motor mounts except the 4th mount near the fuse box.
Can hear it turning the steering wheel.
You can see the movement of the tie rod when the noise is made.

Seems to be a hard metal on metal, like a broken spring or the strut bearings are worn out. I suggest you replace both struts KYB is a good brand. They have complete with springs and upper strut plates.
You need to see more in vid #2. Is anything else jumping? The knuckle? The LCA? If not, it’s a bad or improperly installed tie rod end. I can’t quite get oriented. I’m not seeing a welded stamped steel LCA there, am I?
Based on the videos, my 1st guess is the steering rack. Sounds like the gear is rounded off internally then “jumps” a tooth. Could be wrong since I’m not familiar with what type gearing the rack has.
One of my riding mowers would do that same pop. Took me a while to see exactly what was happening.
