Possible short?

I have a 2006 HHR LT 2.2L. My two from door speakers and left headlight will not work 90% of the time. They randomly turn on then about 5 minutes later they will shut off again. And my cruise control works 90% of the time but will turn off randomly. I was told this could be a short but have no idea where to start trouble shooting. So does anyone have any ideas on where to start or know where I can get a wiring diagram so I can just run new wires from my speakers and headlight?

Unfortunately, nobody in the world will know where to start looking. Look at every wire from end to end. Make sure that the fuse box halves are mating correctly. I am guessing that it is in the left side harness because the Cruise Control will not work if the brake lights don't work.

Check your PM for some possible help.

The brake lights? The break lights are fine. And thank you.

Unless I am reading wrong, you might be looking a couple different problems: the headlight might be flakey (swap in a new bulb to check) - brake lights if faulty will prevent the cruise control from working (I don't profess to understand the logic behind that) - bad connection(s) at the head unit for the radio.

If all the problems happen at the same time, then donbrew is pointing you in the right direction regarding the harness and fusebox.

I've seen a bit of the diagrams for the wiring harness, and man are they hard to follow (ok, I'm old.... but.....) so I don't know how helpful they would be unless one is very experienced and trained in reading them.

Background questions: your HHR is from 2006 - was it a recent purchase, or have you had it a while? How long have the problems been occurring?

The reason that the brake lights must work for the cruise control to work: magic.

When you step on the brake pedal it turns the CC off, the brake light switch is in reality a "brake pedal position sensor" that feeds data to the BCM, if the BCM is getting the incorrect signal (be it voltage or resistance or whatever) then iot turns the CC off.

All things computer are by definition "magic". QED

I got it over a year ago. I think I have the second or third owner. It was also hit on the left side (I forgot to add that) and it was repaired.

Not to confuse things, but another possibility is a ground wire problem. More precisely, a body ground wire. I know it's a long shot, but something to look into.
Kind of an odd combination of things that quit working. Almost sounds as if the speakers going out is a seperate issue from the others.
Way back in my mechanic days,(electronics and wiring were my specialties) a problem like this would get this quote:
" Its gonna be $XX per hour to trace this out. I really can't tell you how long it may take."
