Welcome to the site, hows the battery? Check the ground connection just down to the right of the oil filter housing.
Check the fuse box halves and the fuses and relays are tight

At this point, you have a dead battery, it turns over, but will not start -but you mention at the start, that you had problems getting the oil to show on the dipstick after you changed the oil.

If you had problems checking the oil level - can you explain in more detail what exactly you mean. There is ABSOLUTELY no reason why it would be difficult to check the oil level afterwards other than the fact that one had not put enough oil in it.

And when you did the oil change, how much oil did you put in it?

Hi Monica, to the forums!!

Sorry to hear that you're having issues with your new-to-you HHR.

It's important for us to know as much as possible, so that we can offer good advice to you. We don't know what your knowledge or skill level is, so please don't be offended as we establish this baseline.

When you changed the oil -
Did you change the filter, torquing the filter cap to 18 lbs. ft.?
Did you replace the oil drain plug, torquing it to 18 lbs. ft.?
How much new oil did you use to refill the crankcase?

What other work was done(like a new air filter)?
Do you have an owner manual(so that you can use the proper jumpstart procedure)?
To your knowledge, has the car been in an accident(even as minor as running over a possum)?
Is there any evidence of rodent infestation?

At a minimum, you will need to get the battery charged and tested, and, if good, reinstalled. You probably should get the charging system tested also. Your neighborhood chain auto parts store should do these services at no charge.

EDIT: Whopper beat me to some of the questions!

If you connected jumper cables directly to the battery, back in the spare tire well, no problem.
Some connect to the fuse box under the hood thinking it’s the battery
