rack and pinion

I have a 2008 hhr and it was making a kind of clunk when turning for a couple of days. Then the steering disengaged and no control of the wheels. It looks like the rack fell apart internally. If my wife of son had been driving I think they might have been killed.

Well anyway my brother kicked the wheels and was able to slowly move it out of the way. Has this happened to anyone else..... this is a serious design flaw that could kill someone.

I also have two g5's and have lost all faith with gm. I never saw steering let go like that.... very scary.

Could have been a rack failure, or the intermediate shaft in the steering column that became disengaged somehow.

Let us know what you find, or what your mechanic finds when it's checked out.

I wouldn't consider it a flaw as such, but more or a mechanical failure that could have had serious consequences.

Clunks or odd noises in the steering need to be investigated A.S.A.P.

P.S. to the forum, wish the circumstances were better.

Kind of premature to yell "design flaw" when you don't have the first clue as to the problem. And no, I don't recall EVER hearing about anything like that happening.

Sounds kind of like you are grinding axes with GM. So far I have not read of any systemic failures from you, just one undefined incident. What's the beef? Kind of like me saying I don't trust Canadians because Allan Thicke & Justin Bieber are Canadians.
