Running Boards

Driving home from Tucson yesterday on I 19 , saw a white HHR on the shoulder, it appeared that the drivers side running board had came off at the front. Has anyone heard or seen a similar problem?

Sounds like they hit something, or maybe blew a tire...I've never seen a running board just fall off....at least on something "new" like an HHR.
