Scan tool not reading 2007 LT Help!

Can anybody help? My engine light popped on, and a friend brought over his scan tool, works fine in his 2005 Chevy truck "we tried both side by side" but says error in trying to read my 2007 HHR. I read some where about a recall and dealer reprogram of HHR computers because scan tools and state emmissions were not able to read, however it was pertaining to a 2006 HHR.
We checked that one of the pins in my HHR had power and it did power up his tool but would not read.
Please help Scan tool not reading, Scan tool says error.
Thanks
Frank

Does it have "CAN"? I don't know what that means, but I think that it is relevant.

OP - the reader you have been using is outdated - you need one that has the CAN capability as donbrew alludes to. I had to upgrade to a newer reader that I had been using on a '98 Avenger when I encountered the same situation you have with my 2006 HHR.

Or slip by an Autozone store where they will read the codes for free using a CAN capable code reader (but won't clear the codes due to various reasons).

It's just the name of one of the several OBDII protocols. Basically, the differences between the protocols are the type of communication used, which pins it uses, and the baud speed. That's the so called 'short answer'. It gets fairly complex.
