Unhappy Service Air Bag Light when weight in back

Any time I load anything in the back of my 2006 HHR, my Service Air Bag light comes on. I'm talking about maybe 150-200# of items. Any ideas, or suggestions instead of taking it to the dealer? Thanks!

Welcome to the site, to be sure do you mean in the back seat or the back cargo area?
Do you place anything on the front passengers seat?
I know there were service bulletins for a connection in the kick panel but I believe that was for 2009 models

back cargo area with the back seats folded flat. I did read a few other threads here and have not tried disconnecting the battery & checking the seat connections. But not sure that is relevant since this is the back cargo area.

The rear seat belts. They have an explosive device in them that tightens them on impact.

Has the car been involved in an accident? Has anybody replaced the seat belts?

No. I am the only owner. Never in a wreck & seat belts are original. I hardly ever have anyone riding in the back.

It could be that the weight presses the seat back down enough to trip the sensor

I would think that if it sensed weight in the seat, it may set a seatbelt alert, but why would it set an airbag alert?

True, then a loose ground or connection

I don't think there is a sensor. But there are electrical connections. The SDM (airbag brain) controls the bags and belts. There is also a rear impact sensor. Inside the console there are yaw sensor and roll over sensor.

A technician with the correct computer and training can "service air bag". They do set codes, but only an expert can afford the equipment.

Oh, and I did mention explosive charges, right? This is only 2 weeks after "bloody stump day", let the hospitals take a break.

I just looked at the wiring diagram; I am probably wrong about the rear belts have pretensioners.
Also wrong about the rear impact sensor. There are only 3 of them front, driver door, f passenger door.

As far as I can tell there is no correlation for anything behind the front seats and the air bags. I don't think the 2006 had side curtain bags, but that would be in the headliner and the wiring is in the A pillar.

Could be something to do with OnStar if it is in the car.

It does have curtain airbags. Think I might have to breakdown & call the dealer. Or I might wait & see if it does it again when packed. Maybe it was a fluke. Ha! Thanks for all your input. Really appreciate it. ☺
