I have had issues with mine the past month or so. The Service Tire Monitor has come on about 3 times in the past month and a half. Usually after a few minutes the pressure is back to normal on the one that had the dashes, and once I turn off the car and start it back up, all is fine. I've been wondering whether I should take it in to the dealer or not. My regular warrant is less than a 1,000 miles before it is up, but I do have an extended warranty.
Are they really that problematic? Seems like at least half the people I know that have them, in any car, are having problems with them! Guess at this point, I'm glad all my cars are 07 or older and don't have them.
The problems come from the EXTREMELY weak radio waves used to connect the wheels to the receiver. And I think (not sure) they are probably on the 2.4 GHz band which is shared by damn near everything that has RF remote and most older wireless telephones, wireless networks, garage door openers; in short any RF wireless device that does need an FCC license to be sold.
They do have a small "watch" like battery in them that does get weak after a year or so. Mine started giving errors after the new tires were installed and had to return to replace left front sensor and noted a crack in the sensor housing where it sits on the inside of the rim. Firestone replaced it at no charge and said that is happens some times and said they were sorry.
