Shifting is what ????
Maybe disconnect your fog lights, see if anything gets better. Doubtful, but it's the only thing that you said you did to the car that could possibly cause problems. Did you do anything else to the vehicle?
The wires on the new fog lights were smaller Than those to the old lights so j just snipped the plug and used butt connectors from the old light wires. And I have now snipped those wires again to be sure It wasn’t that and the problem persists.
right before It quit working I put the shifter into low and it sorta felt like it hadn’t been in low in a while (it hasn’t). Maybe some of the linkage got messed up? Can anyone tell me what happens between the trans and where I can see the cable move with the shifter? Thanks!

What you are calling a sensor is a lockout to prevent the transmission from being put in gear without the brake being engaged.
No telling what kind of damage was done when the tranny was forced out if park.
My thoughts are the shift cable became disengaged, out of adjustment or broken.
A good transmission shop can diagnose the condition and siggest the proper repair.

How do you take the shifter itself out? The 4 bolts seem to just spin... the service manager at the Chevy dealer seemed to also think it was the cable had become unadjusted or broken and told me it was fairly easy to self diagnose. He also ran my VIN and there were no shift related recalls on the car.
