Is steering column rattle a safety issue?
Hello. I've had many problems with the suspension on my HHR but after replacing everything it finally felt tight especially after the sway bar bushings. Now I have a low speed rattle and I'm positive it's the steering column because everything else has been checked and or replaced, plus it's only on the driver's side. If I turn my steering wheel when parked I hear this same type of noise. So is this safe to derive it like this just an annoyance?
I just went thru my entire front end, I determined the input shaft to the steering gear rack is loose it walks about an 1/8 up the worm gear.
I swapped it out on Thursday, had an alignment on Friday, just took a 200 mile drive, that little shake is gone!
Inspect the input shaft, have an assistant move the steering wheel back and forth, from 10 o'clock to two o'clock, while you look down at the intermediate shaft yolk, it should not move up and down!
