Steering Component Replacement

I have experienced the typical noise we all seem to have experienced from noisy/rattling steering. I just replaced the intermediate shaft but that did nothing. I have now discovered the noise/clicking to be coming from the column itself. From a You Tube video I saw, it seems that the nylon gears that connect the power steering motor to the steering column can develop slack over time and they can produce just the noise I am hearing. After getting the front wheels up off the ground, I was able to reproduce the same noise and have determined that the noise is indeed in the column.

My question is the column come in two pieces. Can the section that the PS motor mounts to be replaced without having to pull the rest of the column? I don't want to go through all the trouble of removing the steering wheel and everything else if I don't have to. Thanks.

Have you inquired at a GM dealership if it is covered under the extended warranty/recall? Probably not since I think you have an SS.

Be aware that you will probably need somebody with a computer to re align your steering steering angle sensor.
