which prompted me to do this:

my temp is still reading high
hey my temp is averaging about 198. Is this a problem, fluid is good no leaks of any kind. But when i stop in traffic or climb a grade the temp goes up to about 204 or a little more then cools back to no less than 196. What the devil is my problem?
Hey Donna. Don't think you have anything to worry about with those temps. Do you live/drive in a hilly area? Perhaps your vehicle has to work just a little bit harder than the almost completely flat area I live in. As long as it stays in the 195-205 range you would be called "normal" I belive. You have checked for leaks and don't have any, your fluid is staying up to the proper level, any trapped air has been bled out by now so you should be good to go.
The longer you drive it while keeping an eye on your temps in the above mentioned range the more confident you will be that your repair was a complete success. :-)

Thanks to this thread I fixed this problem today. Took me an hour as I dropped the nuts a couple times but the CEL is gone and the temp gauge works fine again. Thanks very much posters I saved some much needed coin!
re: dropped nuts - yeah it is a tight squeeze in there, but doable as you noted.
I may be digging up an old thread here, but Googling this found me the answer to my flat Temp gauge and CEL 128. I just got back from the dealer, and it was replaced under warranty. They were apparently very busy today and I had to wait 3 hours to get it fixed, but as a good note on their part, they programmed a FOB for me for free. I'm not much of a dealer person, but this dealer (Integrity Auto Group, Chattanooga, TN) honestly impresses me. Even at the dealer, the total charge would have been $125. Not that I would have paid the dealer to replace a thermostat I could do myself in 30min for $45, but compared to some of the insane dealer quotes mentioned, this isn't bad at all.
